NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program awards Fellowships
The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program awards Fellowships for graduate students leading to research-based master’s and doctoral degrees in STEM or in STEM education.
Eligibility
The program is limited to U.S. Citizens, U.S. Nationals and Permanent Residents. Current seniors applying for graduate school for spring or fall semester and current graduate students who have not completed more than 12 months of graduate study.
Value
Total of $46,000 ($34,000 for a stipend and $12,000 for tuition).
Application Requirements
The application requires:
- Personal, Relevant Background and Future Goals Statement (3 pages)
- Graduate Research Plan Statement (2 pages)
- Transcripts
- Three references by non-family members

- Talk with your advisor about the program
- Need to identify a research topic – if not already working with a faculty member on research – you will need to identify someone to work with and contact them
- Meet with current fellowship holders to get their advice
- Start preparing your package early
- Have your write-ups reviewed and commented on by others
- Revise your documents based upon these comments
